Gully head erosion worked through the system creating a large deep gully for 4.5 km canalising the flows and eroding vertically. This in turn dries out the surrounding Madumbe fields.

In total, 4 876 people’s livelihoods were secured by stopping the gully head erosion from eroding and draining the entire wetland system. The crops were continually harvested and the wetlands utilised (2012).
