This website and blog is owned and maintained by James Blignaut. James is a natural resource and ecological economist with a special interest and focus on:

  • The economics of restoration and the restoration of economics.

James Blignaut is currently professor extraordinaire attached to the Environmental Governance Department of the School for Public Leadership, Stellenbosch University, and Honorary Research Fellow of the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON). He is also director of ASSET Research and Beatus Advisory Services. He started his career in 1991 at the South African Reserve Bank. In 1994 he joined a community-based NGO near Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal, Zisize, as general manager. After obtaining his doctoral degree in 1995 he joined the Department of Economics, University of Pretoria in 1996, to which he was attached till the end of 2017. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed academic papers, authored or co-authored more than 35 chapters in books, and edited three books. He often also speaks on the topic of restoration and related topics at local and international conferences.
